Anyone who loses their job has a lot on their mind. However, to ensure that the unemployment benefit process runs smoothly, there are a few important things to do right from the start.

Registering with the RAV

Following redundancy, you must register with the Regional Employment Centre (RAV) without delay, that is, as soon as you become aware of the redundancy. If you wait too long, you risk having days deducted from your benefit entitlement. Registration is one of the most common areas where unemployed people suffer unnecessary losses.

Submitting a medical certificate

Anyone who is unwell at the time of registration or shortly afterwards should inform the RAV immediately and submit a medical certificate. During a period of medically certified incapacity for work, the obligation to apply for jobs and provide evidence of such applications is generally waived.

Written confirmation

It is advisable to obtain written confirmation from the RAV that no job applications are required whilst you are on sick leave. Even though the RAV is not legally entitled to demand job applications in the event of illness, such confirmation clarifies the situation and protects against any subsequent misunderstandings or sanctions.

Obligation to apply for jobs

As soon as the period of incapacity for work ends, the usual requirements apply once again. To be on the safe side, you should submit five verified job applications per week, spread evenly throughout the week.
